OUR FIRST ADVENTURE!!

9th March 2013. We planned several weekends at campsites to test our new motorhome and how it all worked but the weather conspired against us and we suddenly found ourselves with only 1 weekend free before we were due to head off to Belgium and we still hadn’t had our test run. There was only one thing to do……….camp on the drive for the night!!
With more snow forecast we gathered our bedding, some ingredients to make dinner and a bottle of wine.
Our son said that we mustn’t cheat by going back in the house and apart from a quick dash back when we suddenly realised we had forgotten the toothbrushes we settled in for the night. We soon got the fire going as it was freezing and then I started on dinner while hubby opened the wine. I thought it best to make an easy 1 pot type dinner so I made a pasta dish with chorizo, courgettes, tomatoes and cream cheese.
As soon as we had finished eating we dumped the dishes in the sink (they could go in the dishwasher tomorrow when we were allowed back in house) and converted the dining area in to a double bed. I got in to flannelette pyjamas to ward off the cold and we snuggled up under the quilt with popcorn for me, peanuts for Glynn and a glass of Merlot each.
There is a flat screen TV with a built in DVD player and the previous owner had left a disc in it which was an easy viewing adventure film so we watched that first before re-filling the wine glasses and settling back down to watch Mamma Mia.
After a very pleasant evening we decided it was time to test the bathroom facilities before settling down for the night.
I entered the bathroom and closed the door and I was a little perplexed by the the fact there was no room to sit on the toilet without leaving the door open. I know I have been married for 10 years but even so there are some things that require privacy!! In light of the fact that my days of wrapping my legs behind my ears are long gone I opt for leaving the door open! Imagine how silly we felt the following week when we finally discovered that the toilet base swivels!
We settled down for the night and soon fell asleep. The first thing that became clear during the night was that I needed to order a memory foam topper if I was going to get a pain free nights sleep as my hip joints were not too impressed with the firmness of the seat cushions. When we awoke the following day there had been a heavy snowfall and everything looked lovely covered in a deep layer of snow. We gathered all our belongings and went back in to the house to shower. I know you might say we weren't getting the full experience but our excuse for preferring the centrally heated bathroom and power shower was that we did not put enough water in the motorhome to shower and we would also have had the issue of dumping the grey water. I was also fairly hopeful that the weather would improve by the time we got to Belgium in a couple of weeks and would hopefully be above freezing point. Little did we know!!
While Glynn loaded the dishwasher with last night’s dishes I got on the Internet to order the mattress topper. We declared our little adventure on the drive a resounding success and felt confident that we were well equipped for our trip to Europe.
